We may often feel as though we don’t have enough time and that the faster we go and the more we try to accomplish, the more elusive time becomes. The teachings of mindfulness and loving-kindness point us gently in another direction. As we practice, we arrive over and over at the actual pace of life through the unlabored movement of our breathing, the regular beating of our hearts, or the changing dance of sensations in the body.
The ancient practitioners extolled the benefits of meditating in a garden, in a forest, on a mountain, near the waters as a way to return our disregulated nervous systems to harmony. In the meditative tradition, the natural pace of life is best expressed by the word “unfolding.” Your garden unfolds its beauty and abundance at a leisurely and imperceptible pace. Flowers bloom, grasses grow, autumn colors appear — all exquisitely on time. Our bodies are no different from the garden or the forest. We unfold throughout our lives growing and changing and evolving as it is our nature to do so. To be in harmony with these changes is our task.
To learn from nature how to relax and allow our own unfolding is very useful. It is one of the enduring pleasures of being on the land at Spirit Rock. We will sit and walk and move and breathe and allow our minds and bodies to unwind. Open to all ages.
