At this retreat women will experience the empowering movement from the separate self to interconnection and from overwhelm into action for the sake of life on Earth.
Many women care deeply about environmental destruction and social injustice but feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of world problems. We can not and need not face all of this alone.
Using teachings and exercises, developed by Joanna Macy, as well as meditation,we will discover the power of facing our feelings for the Earth together. Sharing our grief, anger and fear reveals our mutual belonging in the web of life and frees our power to respond.
In Sangha (community ) we are uplifted as we wake up together, arm in arm. The diverse gathering of women at this retreat will be supported to form regional sanghas and encouraged to continue meeting long after the retreat ends.
We will be inspired to awaken together in order to benefit all beings as we learn about 'Liberation Dharma'. This teaching includes gifts for our time from the revolutionary earliest Buddhist communities in India and from current engaged Buddhism.
Together will learn to embrace this time of Great Unraveling - Great Turning as a challenge which we are fully capable of meeting and as a privilege in which we can take joy.
Silent mornings will be for instruction and practice of mindfulness meditation. Afternoons will be experiential teachings with Joanna. Silent evenings will include sangha building, loving-kindness meditation, and/or Dharma teachings, and more silent meditation. Small groups will be offered by Dharma teachers to support opening and understanding.
Please be aware that this is a workshop-style retreat that will include some periods of silence and some periods of speaking. During the afternoon sessions Joanna Macy will guide interactive exercises. Some exercises will be emotionally evocative as we learn to face and respond to the pain and beauty of our world.
Women of all ages, races, classes and abilities are welcome in our inclusive circle. No previous meditation experience needed.
Joanna Macy is a living treasure. A Dharma scholar and practitioner, at 88 she is blazing in clarity, passion, and the rare gift to inspire us to move from despair into empowered action for the earth.
