By being good to ourselves—by taking in the fruits of our own giving—we give ourselves more capacity to help other people. Practice, in Buddhism, is about developing oneself. It’s about training the mind, certainly for one's own sake, but also for the capacity to help other people. Because it's when our own cup runneth over that we have more we can offer to others.
